Variant Forms and Symbol Lookalikes

First, a quick note on why this matters. Each Greek letter has its own Unicode code point, so a pasted α stays an α in email, Word, Google Docs or code. However, several math symbols look almost identical, and picking the wrong one can break a search or a formula.

Greek Letters Copy and Paste on a Computer

Greek letters copy and paste on Windows, Mac or Chromebook takes two shortcuts. Select the character, copy it, then paste it into your document.

  1. Click a tile at the top of this page, or highlight a letter in the table below.
  2. Press Ctrl+C on Windows and Chromebook, or Command+C on a Mac.
  3. Next, click where the letter should go in your document.
  4. Press Ctrl+V or Command+V to paste it.

If the pasted letter changes font, that is normal. Most apps use the surrounding font, so the letter adopts your body text style. To keep plain text, use Ctrl+Shift+V in Google Docs and most browsers, or Command+Shift+Option+V on a Mac.

When pasting is faster than typing

Greek letters copy and paste wins when you need a letter once or twice. In contrast, if you write Greek every day, a keyboard method saves time. Our guide on how to type Greek letters on any device covers Windows, Mac, phones, Word, LaTeX and HTML.

Greek Letters Copy and Paste on iPhone and Android

On a phone, Greek letters copy and paste works with a long press. The steps are nearly the same on iPhone and Android.

  1. Tap a tile at the top of this page. Or touch and hold a letter in the table until it is selected.
  2. Tap Copy in the menu that appears.
  3. Then open your message, note or document.
  4. Touch and hold the text field, and tap Paste.

For frequent use, add a Greek keyboard instead. On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then Keyboard, then Keyboards, and tap Add New Keyboard. On Android, open Gboard settings and add Greek under Languages.

Tip: On iPhone, you can also save a letter as a text replacement. For example, set “;alpha” to expand to α, and it will work in every app.

Most-copied Greek letters

A handful of letters account for most searches. For instance, the delta symbol Δ means change, and the pi symbol π is the circle constant. Similarly, the sigma symbol Σ means sum, and the omega symbol Ω marks ohms and endings.

Students also copy alpha (α), beta (β), theta (θ) and lambda (λ) for math and science homework. Moreover, mu (μ) and phi (φ) show up often in statistics and geometry.

Greek Letter Variant Forms: ς ϑ ϕ ϵ ϖ ϱ ϰ ϐ ϒ

Variant forms are alternate shapes of a Greek letter with their own Unicode code points. The Unicode Greek and Coptic chart lists them in the range U+0370 to U+03FF. Most of them are technical symbols used in math and physics.

SymbolNameCode pointTypical use
ςFinal sigmaU+03C2Ends a Greek word, as in λόγος
ϑTheta symbol (script theta)U+03D1Alternate θ in math and physics
ϕPhi symbol (stroked phi)U+03D5Alternate φ, common for angles
ϵLunate epsilonU+03F5Alternate ε, the LaTeX default
ϖPi symbol (omega pi)U+03D6Rare variant of π in physics
ϱRho symbol (tailed rho)U+03F1Alternate ρ in math texts
ϰKappa symbol (script kappa)U+03F0Alternate κ in technical work
ϐBeta symbol (curled beta)U+03D0Mid-word β in some older typesetting
ϒUpsilon with hookU+03D2Alternate capital Υ in physics

Final sigma ς is the only variant used in ordinary Greek spelling. Greek writes σ inside a word and ς at the end, so “λόγος” ends in ς. The sigma page explains this rule in more detail.

The other variants are mostly a matter of style. For example, many textbooks write the golden ratio as φ, while others prefer ϕ. Likewise, LaTeX prints ϵ by default and ε only with \varepsilon, as our LaTeX Greek letter command list shows.

Math Symbols That Look Like Greek Letters

Several math and unit symbols look like Greek letters but are separate characters. They have different code points, so search tools and screen readers treat them differently. Copy the one that matches your meaning.

Greek letterLookalike symbolWhy it matters
Δ Greek Delta (U+0394)∆ Increment (U+2206)Mac Option+J types the increment sign
Ω Greek Omega (U+03A9)Ω Ohm sign (U+2126)Unicode prefers U+03A9 for ohms too
μ Greek mu (U+03BC)µ Micro sign (U+00B5)Alt+230 and Mac Option+M give the micro sign
Σ Greek Sigma (U+03A3)∑ N-ary summation (U+2211)Use ∑ only for a summation operator
Π Greek Pi (U+03A0)∏ N-ary product (U+220F)∏ is the product operator, not a letter
δ Greek delta (U+03B4)∂ Partial differential (U+2202)∂ is a curly d, not a Greek letter
ε Greek epsilon (U+03B5)∈ Element of (U+2208)∈ means “is a member of” in set theory
β Greek beta (U+03B2)ß German sharp s (U+00DF)Alt+225 gives ß, which is not beta

Here is the practical rule. Use the Greek letter for a variable, such as Δx or the ohm symbol Ω in a circuit diagram. Unicode treats the ohm sign and the micro sign as compatibility characters, so U+03A9 and U+03BC are the safer choices. Our micro symbol guide covers the µ versus μ question in detail.

On the other hand, use ∑ and ∏ when you mean the large operators in a formula. See sigma notation for how the summation sign works. Also, the partial derivative symbol ∂ gets its own page, because people often mistake it for delta.

Quick fact: Greek capitals such as Α, Β and Ε look exactly like Latin A, B and E. They are still different characters, so a search for “Α” may not find “A”.

Other Ways to Insert Greek Letters

Greek letters copy and paste is only one option. Each system also has a built-in symbol picker, and each picker shows Greek letters.

  • Windows 11: press the Windows logo key and period (.) to open the emoji panel, then choose Symbols. Microsoft describes the shortcut here.
  • Mac: press Fn/Globe+E, or choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols, then search for a letter name such as “sigma”. Apple explains the Character Viewer.
  • Word and Google Docs: use the symbol dialog or the equation editor. Our guide to inserting Greek letters in Word and Google Docs walks through both.
  • Windows Alt codes: a few letters have numeric keypad codes, such as Alt+224 for α. See the full Greek alt code list.
  • Mac keyboard: add the Greek input source and type directly. Follow our steps for typing Greek letters on a Mac.

Codes and Fonts for Pasted Greek Letters

Sometimes a pasted letter shows up as an empty box. That usually means the current font has no Greek glyph, so the fix is a font change. Our Greek letter font guide lists fonts that cover the full alphabet.

Web developers can skip copy and paste entirely. Instead, use an HTML entity such as α or a numeric reference such as α. The Greek letters Unicode and HTML code table lists every code point and entity.

Finally, if you want a printable overview, the Greek alphabet chart shows every letter at a glance. Then come back here whenever you need a quick Greek letters copy and paste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy and paste Greek letters?

Click a tile on this page or select a letter in the table. Press Ctrl+C (Command+C on Mac), then Ctrl+V (Command+V) in your document. On a phone, touch and hold, tap Copy, then tap Paste.

Why does a pasted Greek letter show as a box?

The box means your current font has no glyph for that character. Switch to a font with Greek coverage, such as Arial, Times New Roman, Cambria Math or Noto Sans.

Is the Ω on my keyboard the same as Greek omega?

Not always. Mac Option+Z types the ohm sign U+2126, which looks like omega but is a separate character. Unicode recommends the Greek capital omega U+03A9, even for ohms.

What is the difference between σ and ς?

Both are lowercase sigma. Greek uses σ at the start or middle of a word and ς at the end of a word. Capital Σ has only one form.

Can I paste Greek letters into Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy the letter from this page and paste it into any cell. Google Sheets has no special character menu, so pasting is the simplest method there.
